The Malta Davis Cup team recently figured in the Euro/African Zone IV competition which was played at the Parco di Montecchio, San Marino.

The tournament was open to those nations which had failed to win promotion from Group IV in the Euro/African Zone last season.

Malta, with Marcus Delicata, Mark Schembri and Mark Vella in the side, was drawn in Group B along with Kenya and Iceland. Group A was composed of hosts San Marino, Rwanda, Zambia and Mauritius.

The teams played on a round robin format with each tie consisting of two singles and a doubles match.

On the first day, Malta played against Iceland and lost 3-0. Schembri lost to world no. 152 Raj Bonifacius 4-6, 6-2, 4-6 and Vella crashed to Arnan Sigurdsson 1-6, 0-6. In the doubles, Schembri and Delicata were beaten by Sigurdsson/Halldorsson 1-6, 1-6.

There was a similar 3-0 upset for Malta when they faced Kenya.

Kenya and Iceland reached the semi-final stages and Malta had to play their first match for positions against Mauritius.

Malta beat Mauritius 3-0 and then faced Zambia for fifth place. The Maltese again won 3-0 after fine showings from Delicata and Schembri in the singles and the same two players in the doubles.

Final placings: 1. Iceland, 2. Kenya, 3. San Marino, 4. Rwanda, 5. Malta, 6. Mauritius, 7. Zambia.

Iceland and Kenya were promoted to Division III.
