When he was abducted by armed militants in Nigeria, in May, Maltese oil worker George Scerri never thought he would be held hostage for 33 days. In an exclusive interview with The Sunday Times tomorrow, Mr Scerri recounts his ordeal to battle his fears and boredom.

“Questions raced through my mind: Would I leave the place in one piece? Would I ever enjoy my kids like I used to? Do my family in Malta know anything?”

Mr Scerri was released on June 25 with his colleague and fellow hostage, Pakistani national Mohammed Asif. In June the Foreign Ministry had sent a Maltese delegation to Nigeria in a bid to secure his release.
