A Maltese missionary nun died in a car accident in Israel on Christmas eve as she was on her way to celebrate Christmas.

Sr Victoria Camilleri, 67, known as Sr Salvatorina, worked in Israel for the past 30 years. She hailed from Mellieha.

Another two nuns, an Italian and a Jordanian, also died in the accident and another two were injured.

The nuns were on their way to Jerusalem to celebrate Christmas. At around 2 p.m., their car overturned and hit a concrete electric pole at Yardena Junction in the northern city of Beit She'an.

The injured nuns were flown by helicopter to a hospital in Haifa, where one of them died.

It is not yet known whether Sr Salvatorina's body will be brought to Malta for burial.
