A Maltese man abducted in Libya was freed from his captors by the Radda militia on Wednesday.

Noel Sciberras, the director of a company which administers car parks, was abducted by a gang in Tajoura, a northwestern town outside Tripoli, 48 days ago.

Mr Sciberras was released early on Wednesday morning after an intervention by the Radda militia, which currently controls Mitiga Airport, the only operational airport in Tripoli.

He appeared to be tired but in relatively good health. His captors originally demanded a $5 million ransom, but it was not known by the time of writing whether any payment was made.

In a Facebook message, the militia group said it had arrested the gang, which had kidnapped many citizens as well as foreigners, demanding $5 million ransoms.

The Foreign Affairs Ministry thanked all involved in the operation, particularly the Maltese consul in Libya, Marisa Farrugia, whose “wisdom and diplomacy” led to Mr Sciberras’s release, and the members of the Secret Service.
