The number of Maltese going abroad jumped by 17.9% in November to 23,884, the NSO said today.

Outbound tourist trips to EU countries during November stood at 19,334, while non- EU trips numbered 4,550. Increases of 15 per cent and 34 per cent were registered in EU and non-EU trips respectively when compared to November 2009, the NSo said.

The UK and Italy remained the most popular destinations and shared between them nearly 70 per cent of the total tourist trips.

The majority of outbound tourists were males (63 per cent), while the largest share of tourists fell within the 25-44 age bracket (11,377, or 48 per cent). The latter were followed by those aged 45- 64, numbering 8,232, or 34 per cent.

January-November 2010

During the January-November period, outbound passengers totalled 262,894, up by 10 per cent when compared to 2009. Trips to EU countries comprised 85 per cent of the total and stood at 223,024. Despite a notable increase in the French market, the most popular outbound destinations remained Italy and the UK.
