Two representatives of the Caritas Malta Epilepsy Association (CMEA), Janet Mifsud and Victoria Dimech were recently elected Vice President Europe in the International Executive Committee of the International Bureau for Epilepsy, and member in the European Regional Executive Committee respectively.
This election occurred during the 28th International Epilepsy Congress held in Budapest recently and organised by the International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE) in conjunction with the International Bureau of Epilepsy (IBE).
Around 3,200 professionals and lay people from all over the world attended this congress, during which the most recent scientific and medical developments in the treatment and management of epilepsy were discussed.
Talks were also organised by IBE which were of direct relevance to persons with epilepsy and their families. Issues such as youth, treatment, doctor/patient relationships, campaigns and cross cultural difficulties were discussed.
The Maltese participants were able to network with colleagues worldwide and exchange experiences on how the stigma associated with epilepsy could be overcome.
Through their new appointments, Dr Mifsud and Ms Dimech will be in a better position to monitor what is happening within our region.
