Maltese diplomats are returning to Tripoli and will be back at the embassy on Thursday, Foreign Minister Tonio Borg said this afternoon.

The embassy never closed down during the Libyan uprising, but it was manned solely by locally engaged staff for the past few months after Maltese diplomats were evacuated.

Dr Borg said the staff and facilities at the Tripoli embassy were being increased to enable the embassy to issue visas for travellers to Malta and other European countries.

No visas could be issued while Maltese diplomats did not man the embassy.

The Maltese liaison office in Benghazi will remain open and serve as a consulate, thus ensuring that Malta has a representation in the two biggest cities in Libya, the minister said.

Officials from Malta Enterprise will be based in both Tripoli and Benghazi.
