Composer Karl Fioini’s compositions, Cadavre Exquis, will be performed at the Venice Biennale in October.

To date, the music of Karl Fiorini is regularly being programmed in most European countries. His latest CD of violin concertos, released last year by Divine Arts Metier, the US, has received critical acclaim.

Back in 2012 Fiorini was commissioned by the European Contemporary Orchestra to write a work for orchestra, singers and electronic media for Marseille Capital for Culture 2013.

The composition was premiered at the Ballet National of Marseille.

During the same year, Ensemble Télémaque commissioned another work from Fiorini for chamber ensemble to act as live music for one of Max Linder’s movies performed during Marseille 2013. Mons, Capital for Culture 2015, re-invited Fiorini to have Cadavre Exquis performed last month at the Theatre de Manège, Mons and the next day at the prestigious Flagey Theatre in Brussels.

Fiorini’s work was performed alongside important names in the contemporary music scene such as François Narboni, Bernard Cavanna and Ivan Fedele. The work has now been chosen to be performed during this year’s Venice Biennale on October 6.

“I think every composer loves to have his/her work performed in important venues as well as by excellent musicians, especially when the work is performed for occasions such as the European Capital for Culture. What I loved most during the interpretation of Cadavre Exquis was that the work has become part of the musician’s repertoire and they enjoy performing it,” Fiorini said.

The composer states that he was thrilled to learn that Cadavre Exquis will be performed during the 59th edition of the Venice Biennale in October. “Firstly, because most works for orchestra by contemporary composers have only one or limited performances of their works unless they are really on top. Not because the works are of little artistic value, but mostly because of the many logistical issues to programme new music.

“I think it’s every contemporary artist’s dream to have work exhibited during the Venice Biennale. It’s somewhat a big achievement to honour my country there as well as a great satisfaction that I’m making part of an international artist community.”
