Chef Robert Cauchi, who works in Jersey, is making the final preparations to take part in the semi-final of the Bocuse D'Or competition which is regarded as the Formula 1 race for chefs around the world, the Institute of Tourism Studies (ITS) said yesterday.

A former ITS student, Mr Cauchi will represent Malta for the first time in the history of this competition.

He will join participants from 19 countries in Stavanger, Norway, in July. Malta, Estonia, Hungary and the Czech Republic are the new countries in the competition.

Each participant has to serve 12 portions, 10 to judges and two to special guests. Dishes have to be served hot and the judges will take into account the taste, temperature and presentation of the dishes.

Those ranked in the top 12 places will have the chance to enhance their standing by qualifying for the finals of to be held in Lyon, France, next year.

"Being selected to participate is already an honour, as if you were nominated for an Oscar. It is the ultimate place where an artist, in this case in the culinary arts, can be," said Mr Cauchi, who is being supported by the Malta Catering Food Association.
