The Consumers Association is insisting that VW should compensate the Maltese owners of diesel-engined cars which were part of the emissions cheating scandal, in the same way as American car owners are being compensated.

The association said it has contacted the local agent of the German carmaker as well as the transport authorities, calling for compensation and for remedial action so that the cars would conform to the original specifications.

It regretted that the authorities in Europe were silent on this issue, in contrast to what had been done in the US and Australia.

The local agent, Continental Cars, on its website carries a notice issued by VW which says: "We are working intensively to find a solution and will immediately inform every customer affected about any actions planned as soon as possible.

"We would like to ensure you that we are systematically pursuing the path to clarification and transparency.

"We guarantee that Volkswagen will do everything necessary to win back the trust of our customers, partners and the public.

"We will do so with necessary speed and with the thoroughness that you now expect of us."
