Dawn Alison Aquilina was recently awarded a Doctorate in Philosophy at Loughborough University, UK. She defended her thesis entitled 'Degrees of Success: Negotiating a Dual Career Path in University Education and Elite Sport in Finland, France and the UK' successfully last June, under the supervision of Prof. Ian Henry.

Dr Aquilina is a former member of the Maltese national women's basketball team. She won a gold medal at the Small Nations Games hosted in Malta in 2003 and competed in the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne in 2006.

She has also represented Loughborough University in the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) basketball league for six consecutive years, winning the national title in 2006, and was voted Loughborough University Female Sports Personality in December 2007. At present, she is working at the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) Headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland. Dr Aquilina is the daughter of Paul and Ruth Aquilina of Zebbuġ.
