Malta has this year joined the rest of the world in celebrating V-Day by taking part in One Billion Rising.

One Billion Rising is a revolutionary campaign to end violence against women and girls.

It is being celebrated worldwide on V-Day’s 15th anniversary. V-Day was inspired by Eve Ensler’s play The Vagina Monologues.

Through today’s activity, one billion women and those who love them “walk out, dance, rise up and demand” an end to this violence.

The Maltese initiative was organised by 43-year-old Maltese survivor Lorraine Camilleri, who was abused by first husband 20 years ago. She is now a victim support volunteer.

Today’s activity saw around 200 people ignore the rain and dance in St Anne Square, Sliema. Passers-by expressed their support for the activity by joining in.

The activity was attended by, among others, AD chairman Michael Briguglio; Michelle Muscat, the Opposition leader’s wife; ministers Jason Azzopardi and George Pullicino; PN president Marthese Portelli; Nationalist MP Karl Gouder; and PL candidates Nikita Alamango and Cyrus Engerer.

The initiative is supported by Aditus and Integra and was organised in collaboration with the Sliema council.
