A group of nine Maltese adventurers participating in the Kilimanjaro charity climb reached the summit of the highest point in Africa in the early hours of Valentine's Day, following a gruelling 5,895-metre ascent.

The group left Malta on February 7 for Tanzania where they started the physically- and mentally-challenging climb to the top to raise awareness and funds for the construction of an orphanage in Nyamonge, close to the Kisumu Municipality in Kenya.

The man behind the challenge, Keith Marshall, said the group had messaged him yesterday morning from the summit after many hours of climbing.

Training in Malta for the challenge consisted of hiking around the countryside and using the clay hills around the Selmun and Mellieħa area.
