Three members of Freespirit Acting - director Carlos Farrugia (right), assistant director Duncan Azzopardi (left) and Rodianne Zammit (centre) - attended an intensive course on Forum Theatre in Luxembourg.

The course, named 'Step into the stage: take action' is part of the Youth in Action programme co-funded by the European Union. Twenty-five participants from EU countries, including Italy, Portugal, Bulgaria, Romania, Sweden, Latvia, Turkey, Slovenia, Luxembourg and Malta, had the opportunity to develop their theatrical skills and to work and share their ideas.

One of the evening activities was an intercultural night, where each contingent manned a stand representing their respective country.

The workshop delved into the Forum Theatre technique. This type of theatre was invented by Augusto Boal as part of what he called the 'Theatre of the Oppressed'. Actors create a short sketch regarding social problems, with a clear focus on the oppressor and the oppressed.

Other actors or members of the audience can stop the performance and replace a member of the sketch to change the outcome of the situation.

Freespirit Acting is looking forward to its next big project, Tamara - a passion play with a difference to be held on March 27, 28 and 30 at City Theatre, Valletta. For more information call 9946 7410 or 7926 9247 or e-mail info@freespiritacting.com.
