Maltco Lotteries has been declared the winning bidder to operate public lotteries in Malta.

Maltco was first granted a licence to operate the national lottery for seven years in 2004. The new concession is for 10 years.

A rival bid was made by GTech, a subsidiary of Lottomatica.

The Finance Ministry said Maltco offered €39.1 million for the 10-year concession which will commence on July 5.

The international call for tender was made on October 24.  Both bidders had satisfied technical and financial requirements and due diligence criteria, the ministry said. The financial bids were opened today and Maltco was found to have submitted a bid of €39.1m while GTech's bid was €36.2 million.

Last April, Maltco said it paid €120 million in taxes to the government in the seven years since it was set up, and €6 million were transferred to the Good Causes Fund from unclaimed prizes.

John Katakis, Maltco's CEO  said that many people thought that the project did not have any prospects and indeed, many companies which were initially interested in running the National Lottery dropped out at the early stages. But Maltco was a success story for the past seven yeas and had invested €22 million in Malta.
