The Maltese table football national team this weekend won a bronze medal during the World Cup organised by the Federation of International Sports Table Football in Rochefort, Belgium.

Malta played in Group 2 winning against Gibraltar (4-0) and the Netherlands (3-0) and losing to Italy.

In the quarter finals Malta faced Portugal winning 2-1 and progressed to the semi-finals losing 1-2 to Spain.

The Malta team was composed of Mark Gauci (Captain) Charles Aquilina, Massimo Cremona, Joseph Mifsud, Angelo Borg and president Joe Zammit Pavia.

In the open individual events Mark Gauci placed second in the group after a shootout with Massimiliano Nastasi. In the last 32 he eliminated Italian Massimo Bolognino winning 1-0 but lost to Luca Colangelo 1-2 in the last 16.

Angelo Borg, the other player in the open event, won the group with seven points. In the last 32, he won against the Austrian Alexander Haas 3-1. Borg was eliminated in the last 16 by the Belgian Valery Dejardin during extra time.

In the veterans category, Charles Aquilina won his group with seven points. In the last 32 he eliminated English player Justin Finch (2-1) but was eliminated in the last 16 stage by Italian Francesco Mattiangeli losing 1-0.

Massimo Cremona also won his group with seven points but was eliminated in the last 32 by Belgian Daniel Scheen (1-0).

The other player in this category Joseph Mifsud, who was eliminated at group stage.
