Referring to the article A Siege Malta Did Not Need by Paul Calleja (September 11), I found his ridiculous attempt to second-guess history a really good piece of comedy writing.

His main point that Malta should have invited the Italians to take over the country brings to mind a remark made by Winston Churchill in 1938. He was being threatened by the Nazis that if war were declared Italy would join Germany. His response was: "That's only fair, because we had to have them in the last war"! Conspicuously absent from Mr Calleja's piece was the word "honour". On that subject Churchill said: "Britain and France had to choose between war and dishonour. They chose dishonour. They will have war."

The world is grateful that at that dangerous time the Maltese nation chose honour and the dishonourable views espoused by Mr Calleja were not even considered.
