Malta has won the Mediterranean Horse Racing Union Championship for the second time, the Malta Racing Club has announced.
Two wins in as many races by jockey Tony Demanuele during the championship's final leg in Russia meant Malta took home the honours as well as €20,000 in prize money.
The Maltese team was made up of Julian Farrugia, Rodney Gatt, Tony Demanuele and Charles Camilleri, and involved races in Malta, Italy and Russia. A French leg was cancelled following the terrorist attack in Nice last month.
Malta's team performed excellently throughout the championship, with Farrugia winning one race in Malta, Gatt winning once in Italy and Demanuele completing the clean sweep in Russia.
Sports parliamentary secretary Chris Agius congratulated the team on the win. In a statement, he said that the government's drive to privatise the Marsa horse racing track would help provide jockeys with an international-calibre track.
