The unemployment rate in Malta is currently the lowest since 2000. It is also the third lowest rate in Europe, the government observed today.

Referring to statistics issued by Eurostat the government said unemployment in Malta in May stood at 5.7 per cent. Only Austria and Germany had a lower rate.

Malta's rate was less than half the EU average.

The figures, the government said, was the fruit of its work for economic growth and job creation.

It noted that the number of people registering for work had dropped to 7,141 from 7,789 in January.
