Malta U-18 were off to a flying start in the European Championship Division C after they beat San Marino 76-66 in their opening match at the Ta' Qali Pavilion yesterday.

Bruno Dipietrantonio's men were in control from the outset and took a commanding 18-point lead by the end of the opening two sessions - 39-17.

San Marino tried to get back into the match, but the hosts kept up the initiative and inspired by Italy-based player Sam Deguara they easily administered their lead to finish as comfortable winners.

Deguara was the leading marksman of the match with 23 points.

Today, Malta will be looking to maintain their unbeaten run in Group A when they take on Monaco at 7.15 p.m.
