The government this afternoon welcomed the results of the European Commission’s latest Internal Market Scoreboard which placed Malta first amongst EU member states.

The scoreboard was published earlier today.

Charlie McCreevy, European Commissioner responsible for the Internal Market and Services, said that Malta had ‘managed to improve on an already enviable transposition record.’

"This result is further evidence of the sound internal structures that are in place within the administration of the Maltese Government which is not only coping well with the demands of EU membership, but is faring much better than the administrations of other member states which are much larger and have more experience within the Union," the Department of Information said in a statement.

The European Commission’s Internal Market Scoreboard takes into account all notifications of directives relating to the Internal Market with a transposition deadline of 31 October 2008.

There are 1611 such directives and Malta transposed 1606, thus bringing down barriers and simplifying rules to enable Maltese individuals, consumers and businesses make the most of the opportunities offered to them by having direct access to 27 countries and 480 million people.
