Malta set a good example to the international community by helping people flee the unrest in Libya, the Chinese Deputy Foreign affairs minister said yesterday.

“It is beyond our imagination what would have happened had it been delayed another week,” Mme Fu Ying said.

Some 5,000 Chinese citizens were evacuated through Malta in what was described as “the largest evacuation that China has ever seen”.

Passing on a letter of thanks from China’s Prime Minister, the Deputy Foreign Minister again conveyed her gratitude for the help Malta has given the Chinese.

The fact that some ill evacuees were given free medical treatment, she said, was “very heart warming” and she found it impressive that so many citizens had been evacuated in such a short time.
