A Marsa distribution centre switchboard fault led to a widespread power cut this afternoon.

Readers reported a power outage in Naxxar, Sliema, Mosta, Tal-Qroqq, Attard, Bugibba, San Gwann, Mtarfa, Swatar, Siggiewi and all of Gozo.

The power cut was reported at about 4 p.m. A reader from Mtarfa said power was restored after 45 minutes.

Enemalta said the outage was caused by a switchboard fault at the Marsa South distribution centre which caused a power cut in  Marsa, Luqa, Qormi, and parts of Paola.

During switching operations, the distribution centre suffered another fault which led to the tripping of Boiler 8 and a Gas turbine at Marsa Power Station and Mosta Distribution centre, which  supplies the north of Malta.

Power is expected to be completely restored at 5.00pm.
