Malta suffered a nation-wide power cut this afternoon following a fault at boiler seven of Marsa power station. Power was lost at 4.10 p.m, causing many factories to close early for the day.
Readers reported a 'crazy' traffic situation, particularly at Marsa, as traffic lights went out. A supermarket in San Gwann ordered its customers to leave as the tills lost power.
Enemalta apologised for the inconvenience and said its engineers were working to restore electricity in the shortest time possible.
Power started to be restored to some areas at about 4.57 p.m. starting from Mater Dei Hospital, which had been operating on generators. That was followed by Malta Freeport and parts of Msida and Sliema.
By 5.30 power was restored to parts of Tarxien, Zejtun, Luqa, Ghaxaq, Zabbar, Hal Far, Zurrieq, Fgura, Marsascala, Qrendi, Mqabba and Cottonera.
Enemalta said at 7.45 that power had been restored to 70 per cent of the country, with power having been supplied to parts of Sta Venera, Birkirkara, Mriehel, Qormi amd St Julians.
Power was restored to all localities at 8.47 p.m.
