Malta's national waterpolo team yesterday had an auspicious start to their European 'B' Championship campaign in Turkey after a sound 14-6 win over Denmark.

Pierre Borg's players had a remarkable performance, particularly in the opening two sessions during which the team built a seven-goal advantage after changing ends 9-2 in front.

Top scorer for Malta was Sliema ace John Soler with five goals. Nicki Lanzon scored three times and Edward Aquilina and John Paris found the Danish net two times each. Neil Cassar and Clint Mercieca notched Malta's other two goals.

Two years ago in Stockholm, the national team, then under Dirk Dowling, had also started with a win over the Danes.

On that occasion Malta won 10-6 and went on to win a historic bronze medal at the end of the tournament after finishing third behind Poland and Ukraine.

Malta play their second match today when facing Israel.
