The Malta squash teams kicked off their quest of winning gold in the teams competition of the Small Nations' Games in style today after registering comfortable victories over Iceland at the Squashouse in Vaduz.

The men’s team, formed by Carl Camilleri, Brad Hindle Deguara, Mark Lupi, Joseph Desira and Daniel Zammit Lewis came from behind to beat Iceland 4-1.

Camilleri was first on court against Gunnar Thordarsson and the Maltese player was beaten 3-1. However, Lupi soon put the Maltese back on level terms when he had the better of Thorbjorn Jonsson 3-1.

Zammit Lewis had little difficulty in lowering the colours of Kim Magnus Nielsen 3-0 while Hindle Deguara posted a comfortable 3-0 win over Robert Halldorsson. Desira wrapped up Malta’s win with a 3-1 success over Halldor Magnusson.

In the women’s competition, the Maltese girls found little opposition from Iceland to kickstart their commitments in the round-robin competition with a comfortable 3-0 win.

Theresa Brousson battled past Hildur Agusta Olafsdottir 3-0 while Annabelle Olivieri Munroe, who plies her trade in the Czech Republic, outsmarted Dagny Ivarsdottir 11-8, 11-7, 12-10. Malta’s top seed Diane Desira easily disposed of Rosa Jonsdottir 3-0.

Tomorrow, the Maltese selections face Monaco
