Before this newspaper takes the apparently inevitable step of creating a daily divorce supplement, could I suggest a solution that would get all those prevaricating politicians off the hook?

The answer to the divorce dilemma is simply to have no divorce legislation in Malta: not to introduce a law to allow it; nor to have a law to ban it. Just remove any reference to divorce from the statute book.

Couples who want to get divorced will then be free to do so.

Those who are happily (or at least contentedly) married can continue to live their married lives. The idea that a nation, or even its elected representatives, should have a vote on whether couples should be irrevocably bound together is ridiculous (unless Malta is hoping that its one claim to fame should be as the most backward country on earth).
