Alternattiva Demokratika yesterday called on the government to intervene with the Russian government so that it gives its go ahead for a no-fly zone and air exclusion area on Libya in the UN Security Council.
Speaking during a press conference yesterday, AD spokesman on EU and International Affairs Arnold Cassola said this UN decision would prevent the massacre of innocent civilians.
Prof. Cassola said that at its council meeting in Budapest in three weeks’ time, the European Green party would be presenting a resolution on the situation in Libya and the Maghreb. Russia and China, both permanent members of the Security Council, are against the imposition of a no-fly zone over Libya.
Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi said that in the eventuality of a UN-backed no-fly zone,Malta would not participate in any military action as this breached the Constitution.
“This resolution will be taking into consideration the AD demand for real solidarity among EU member states and therefore for ‘responsibility sharing’ among EU member states of the thousands of refugees expected to flee Libya,” Prof.Cassola said.
