A tremor registering 3.3 on the Richter scale was felt in Malta yesterday at 7.13pm, sending many people to social media asking if it was an earthquake or an explosion.

The tremor was registered just south of the island at latitude 35.799794, longitude 14.485559. It was the strongest of a series, with another four tremors registered, the first measuring 1.9 at 12.42pm.

The strongest came at 5.54pm and measured 2.7.
