Holders Malta bounced back from a disappointing start to the European Championships after recording two successive wins in Ireland yesterday.

The Maltese team had opened their title defence bid on a negative note after losing to England and Wales in their opening matches. However, the Maltese players yesterday made amends for their disappointing start after beating Northern Ireland and France with an identical 10-5 scoreline.

Following these results, Malta are still in contention to reach the semi-finals. Last night, they were due to play another two group matches, against Ireland and Scotland.

In the individual competition, Clayton Attard and Jesmond Schembri are through to the last 16.

Attard cruised past Manny Bryne, of Northern Ireland, 6-0 but Schembri had to fight hard to see off England's Sam Jeffrey, 6-5.
