Malta has been re-elected on the International Maritime Organisation during elections held today at the IMO Headquarters in London.

The 40 member states that make up the council were elected from among the 170 member states.

The IMO is the UN maritime specialised agency with the objective of providing the machinery for cooperation among governments in the field of governmental regulation and practices relating to technical matters on shipping engaged in international trade.

It aims to encourage and facilitate the general adoption of the highest practicable standards in maritime safety, efficiency of navigation and prevention and control of marine pollution from ships.

The organisation is also empowered to deal with administrative and legal matters related to these purposes.

Malta has been a council member for the past 14 years.
