Stand-alone steel plaques have been installed at the newly-renovated Ġnien l-Istazzjon in Birkirkara, courtesy of HSBC. The plaques document the history of the public garden that housed Malta's railway station in four languages.

The railway service in Malta was officially inaugurated on February 28, 1883 and the regular service for passengers started the following day, on March 1.

The donation of the plaques, which is part of HSBC's scheme to fund projects by local councils for the benefit of the community, was made by HSBC's northern area director Anthony Buttigieg in the presence of Elizabeth Vella, service and sales branch manager at the Birkirkara branch.

Mayor Michael Fenech Adami thanked HSBC for supporting such an educational initiative which revives memories of Malta's railway service in times past.
