FinanceMalta, Malta Enterprise and the Embassy of Malta in Berlin recently joined forces to organise a workshop to promote Malta as a financial services centre at an event in Frankfurt.

The workshop was attended by around 20 participants in the main representing companies in banking, insurance and wealth management.

During his presentation the Ambassador of Malta Germany Karl Xuereb outlined the various advantages that Malta offers to investors. He emphasised the importance of German investment to Malta and the success that had already been achieved by many German companies in Malta. Currently, around 50 German enterprises operate in Malta providing over 2000 jobs.

The audience was also addressed by Bernice Buttigieg of FinanceMalta whose presentation outlined the historical development of Malta as a financial services centre and highlighted the specific opportunities that Malta presents in banking, insurance and wealth management.

Tax experts from PricewaterhouseCoopers, Germany provided attendees with an overview of the German and Maltese tax systems. Reference was made to the new protocol to the double taxation treaty in force since 2001 which was signed earlier this year to facilitate the exchange of tax information upon request.

After the event Mr Xuereb stated: “I am delighted with the level of interest and participation at today’s event. This is just the kind of event that will help us to further raise the profile of Malta in Germany and heighten awareness on the part of investors and their advisors”.

The workshop was organised with the support and assistance of Richard Leitermann, Malta’s Honorary Consul in the State of Hessen and Sonja Winner of Malta Enterprise.
