A signing ceremony establishing diplomatic relations between Malta and Nauru was held last week at the Permanent Mission of Malta to the United Nations in New York.

The protocol was signed between ambassadors Saviour Borg and Marlene Moses. The two diplomats exchanged views on the role of small states in the UN's activities, as well as the vulnerabilities they have to overcome because of specific handicaps and as a result of climate change.

On her part, Ms Moses expressed her profound thanks and appreciation for the lead Malta continued to take in a number of international fora, including the UN and the Commonwealth, to assist countries like Nauru.

Nauru is a tiny Pacific island with a population of about 14,000. It joined the UN in 1999 as the world's smallest independent republic.
