As a member of the United Nations, Malta had to abide by the Security Council’s decision to impose sanctions on Muammar Gaddafi’s Libyan regime, Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi said yesterday.

“Malta is a full member of the UN, which means any measures taken are fully applicable to the Maltese government without condition,” he said during a telephone interview aired on the party’s station, Radio 101.

The Security Council yesterday voted unanimously to impose sanctions on Col Gaddafi’s regime including his five adult children and top associates.

All 15 nations on the council backed an arms embargo and asset freeze while referring Col Gaddafi to the International Criminal Court for alleged crimes against humanity.

Dr Gonzi said the fact the council reached a unanimous decision – a rare occurrence – highlighted the worldwide condemnation of the events unfolding in Libya.

He pointed out Malta was discussing the issue at EU level and, a few days ago, proposed the arms embargo.

Dr Gonzi stressed on the government’s commitment to ensure all Maltese people in Libya returned to Malta safely. He said he was proud of the country for opening its arms to help people of different nationalities leave Libya as the situation escalated.
