Lithuanian Foreign Minister Linas Linkevicius promised Minister for European Affairs Louis Grech that the Lithuanian Presidency of the European Union would be more sensitive to the problems being suffered by countries on the periphery because of irregular migration.

Mr Grech met his Lithuanian counterpart in Vilnius where he was attending an informal meeting of European Affairs Ministers.

He thanked Lithuania for the assistance it had already given Malta but insisted that more needed to be done by other member states as the country was carrying a disproportionate burden.

The two sides, who, among other matters, also discussed the situation in Syria, agreed to appoint delegations to consult on subjects of common interest.

An agreement was reached that after the conclusion of the Lithuanian Presidency, Malta would send a delegation to Lithuania for the latter to assist Malta in its preparations for the EU Presidency in 2017.
