Libyan foreign minister Abdulraham Mohamed Shalgam and Home Affairs Minister Tonio Borg yesterday signed the first extradition treaty between Malta and a north African country.

As no such agreement had previously existed, the two countries could only extradite nationals in specific and limited matters through United Nations conventions, such as the Vienna convention on drug trafficking.

The government said the agreement was another step forward in the strengthening of relations between the Maltese and Libyan people.

Mr Shalgam yesterday paid a courtesy visit to President Guido de Marco.

He left Malta yesterday evening.
