Malta scored well below the EU average on the Innovation Scoreboard.

The island yesterday ranked 22nd out of the 28 EU states, moving up one place from last year's survey.

Despite this, the scoreboard said Malta was one of five moderate innovators, having exhibiting a higher growth rate than the EU average.

Malta’s overall innovation performance, it said, was currently improving at an average annual rate of two per cent.

The island's main innovation strengths were in community trademarks, non-research, development and innovation expenditures as well as in employment in knowledge-intensive activities.

Very high growth was also observed in public design. On the other hand, large declines in growth were observed in non-EU doctorate students, sales share of new innovations and overseas license and patent revenues.
