The seventh edition of the Malta International Film Festival, organised by KRS Film Distributors, will take place at the Embassy Cinemas in Valletta from Wednesday to November 9.

Cinemagoers can see Noomi Rapace return as the enigmatic Lisbeth Salander in TheGirlWhoPlayed withFire, the second film in the Millennium trilogy.

Once again, the festival boasts a tantalising line-up of award-winning and acclaimed films.

The 14 films, from Australia, China, France, India, Italy, Mexico, Spain, Sweden, the UK and the US, as well as a Norway/Sweden and a Czech Republic/Denmark/Germany co-production, comprise an eclectic mix of genres, including war dramas, comedies, love stories, horror productions and family films.

Australia’s offering comes from acclaimed Shine director Scott Hicks. TheBoysareBack stars Clive Owen as a sports writer who finds himself thrown into single parenthood after the sudden death of his wife.

Together, the Chinese film that won the audience award for Best International Feature at the Florida Film Festival, focuses on the relationship between a violin prodigy and his father.

France is represented by two films. With a Bafta for Best Film not in the English Language and the Jury Grand Prix at Cannes, A Prophet reaches our shores on a wave of critical acclaim.In a powerhouse performance, Tahar Rahim stars as a young man jailed for a minor offence but spends his time behind bars moving up the ranks in the criminal world as he fights brutal racism.

CocoChanelandIgorStravinsky chronicles the passionate affair between the two in the 1920s.

MyNameisKhan, from India, is about the titular Khan, a young man from Mumbai who suffers from Asperger’s Syndrome.

Oscar-winning director Giuseppe Tornatore’s latest opus represents Italy . Baaria is a drama about the lives of three generations of a Sicilian family, from the 1920s to the 1980s , starring Raoul Bova and Monica Bellucci.

The Mexican drama I’mGonna Explode is a rites-of-passage drama about a teenage couple on the run .

Lisbeth Salander is one of the most iconic anti-heroines of the 21st century, and she is back in TheGirlWhoPlayedWithFire – the second instalment of the bestselling Millennium Trilogy.

Noomi Rapace returns as the enigmatic Salander, who’s fighting accusations of murder and trying to clear her name with the help of journalist Mikael Blomkvist (Mikael Nykvist).

Up-and-coming British actress Gemma Arterton takes the titular role TamaraDrewe , Stephen Frears’ film about a young woman whose arrival in an upper crust English countryside village ruffles the feathers of the community.

Secretariat is the lone entry from the US, in which Diane Lane stars as a woman fighting sexism in a male-dominated world.

The Czech/Danish/German coproduction FlameandCitron narrates the true story of two Danish resistance fighters during World War II.

The horror genre is well and truly represented in the festival with three titles: the universally acclaimed Sweden/Norway coproduction LettheRightOneIn, winner of the Best Foreign Film prize in the British Independent Film Awards, in which a 12-yearold Oskar fantasises about getting his revenge on bullies who pick on him incessantly.

REC2 is the sequel to the successful Spanish film REC, with the action unfolding in the immediate aftermath of events of the first film.The Cannes Jury Prize winner Thirst, from South Korea, tells the story of a priest who transforms into a blood-craving vampire when a medical experiment goes horribly wrong.

All films which were not shot in English will be shown in their original language with subtitles. Two titles will be shown on each day of the festival. The first film will be at 10.30 a.m., 3 and 6 p.m.; while the second will be at 9 p.m.

The 14 films shown in the first week will be repeated in the second week on different days and at different times.
