Malta's women national squash team won their ninth gold medal in the history of the European Small Nations Games after topping this year's tournament in Monaco.

The side composed of Annabelle Monroe Diamantino, Theresa Camilleri, Johanna Rizzo, Colette Sultana and team manager Liz Said beat no.1 seeds and favourites Luxembourg 2-1 before trouncing Liechtenstein 3-0 in the final to defend their unbeaten record.

Against Luxembourg, Rizzo outclassed L. François 3- 0 while Camilleri had the better of V. Camilla 3-0. Diamantino was up next against Sandra Dennis and lost 3-2. Still it was Malta who won the match 2-1.

In the final against Liechtenstein, the Maltese girls needed just five games to secure the win and the gold medal for the first time since 2003.

The individual competition started yesterday with Rizzo and Camilleri winning their opening round matches 3-0. Sultana went down to Monaco's Anne Baldoni 3-2 and Said lost her match 3-0.
