Malta in 2009 registered the highest percentage increase in the number of computer graduates in the EU and had the highest percentage of computer graduates among the 27 member states, according to figures issued this morning by Eurostat, the EU's statistical arm.

Between 2005 and 2009, Malta’s share of computer graduates increased by almost four per cent, from 1.9 per cent of all graduates in 2005 to 5.6 per cent in 2009.

This positive trend contrasts sharply with the EU which on average saw the number of ICT graduates shrink to 3.4 per cent from 4 per cent in 2005.

According to Eurostat, in 2009, Malta also produced the highest percentage of computer graduates in the EU together with Austria. On the other hand, the laggards in this sector in 2009 were Italy and Portugal with only 1.3 and 1.7 per cent of their graduates specialising in ICT.
