Maltese and Estonian businessmen could assist each other in projects in the North African and northern European regions, according to Foreign Affairs Minister Tonio Borg.

Speaking during a meeting with Estonian Foreign Minister Urmas Paet last week, Dr Borg said the two countries were exploring ways to enhance trade and business links. "There is huge potential for such initiatives, which would ultimately be beneficial for both countries," he said.

Dr Borg said a Maltese company that operated the international franchise McDonalds ran 30 restaurants in Malta, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania and was planning to expand its operations and open another eight restaurants in Malta and the Baltics over the next two years.

The two ministers discussed trade and political relations.

Mr Paet thanked the government for supporting his country's preparations to adopt the euro.

He emphasised the importance of establishing better trade relations and congratulated Malta for securing the right to host the European Asylum Support Office.
