Malta has been elected to the council of the International Maritime Organisation for the seventh time.

The election took place at the IMO headquarters in London, during the organisation's 26th general assembly.

Malta's permanent representative to the IMO, Lino Vassallo, addressed the assembly on behalf of Infrastructure Minister Austin Gatt. He spoke about the appeal made by Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi during the UN General Assembly for a revision of the United Nations' Convention on the Law of the Sea.

The assembly, which meets every two years, is the highest organ within the IMO.
