The Minister for Home Affairs and National Security, Manuel Mallia highlighted Malta’s ‘deep concern’ on the regional implications arising from the internal security and political situation in Libya when he attended an informal EU Defence Ministers’ meeting.

The ministry said he reiterated Malta’s support and encouragement to all efforts directed towards the democratic process in Libya and called for respect to the elected institutions in the country.

“The EU must do all what it can to ensure that Libya does not become a battleground for regional players and EU mediation efforts should also be intensified to bring about a ceasefire. A pro-active approach to tackle the instability in Libya is required since no country in the EU is immune to the potential spill over effects,” the Home Affairs Ministry said.

The ministers discussed a range of issues including the security implications of the crises in Ukraine, Syria and Libya
