The Maltese authorities considered the provision of acute medical treatment to an American who was critically wounded in the attack on the US consulate in Benghazi late on Wednesday.

However, informed sources said Maltese medical consultants after considering  the nature of the man's injuries decided that it was not viable to bring the patient to Malta.

The US ambassador and three other Americans were killed in the attack, as well as several Libyans.

CLASHES CONTINUE

Meanwhile, clashes between demonstrators and police continued last night outside US embassies or offices in Cairo and Tunis.

The protests were sparked by a film which insults the Prophet Mohammed.

Egyptian security forces fired tear gas as demonstrators threw stones.

The protests in Cairo started late on Tuesday when around 2000 protesters ripped down the US flag and burned it.
