Malta and China have signed what was described as a bilateral film co-production agreement that will pave the way for further collaboration between the two countries.

The agreement, signed in Beijing following negotiations led by the Maltese Embassy in China and the Malta Film Commission, is also intended to open up new opportunities for Maltese film-makers and the film servicing industry.

China has the fastest growing movie market in the world and the Malta Film Commission has been increasing initiatives to attract interest from Chinese production companies, including participating at the Hong Kong International Film and TV Market.

Earlier this year, a Chinese production was shot in Malta. Another one is in the works. Tourism Minister Edward Zammit Lewis said having a feature film set in Malta and released in China would translate into an extraordinary marketing campaign for the island and its beautiful locations.
