In an article published in your Culture and Entertainment section (The Sunday Times, September 26), it was stated in the introduction that Malta is officially exhibiting “for the first time ever” at the Frankfurt Book Fair.

This is not correct. The Ministry of Education, way back in 1984 or 1985 took an active part in the 36th Frankfurt Book Fair. I was responsible for organising, setting up and manning the government’s stand.

A special flyer was prepared and distributed during the book fair. Of great interest was a special exhibit on the stand, displayed under great security – the first book ever published and printed in Malta, which during the period of the exhibition was 340 years old.

Maltese publishers and printers contributed with copies of books published and printed in Malta.

A major company from Malta, that was then printing thousands of books for the British market, exhibited a variety of books which showed the high standard that printing had reached in that period.

A number of Maltese publishers or their representatives attended the exhibition, among them were Tony Cassar Darien and Joseph Mizzi, both of whom were kind enough to man the stand for a few minutes in my stead.
