The following are the top stories in the Maltese and overseas press:

The Times reports that a man plans to institute legal action after having been fined for parking within a parking scheme in Pieta'. It also reports that a Mosta man has been charged with double attempted murder following a shooting on Saturday.

The Malta Independent leads with the same story on the arraignment. It also reports that five people were injured in incidents yesterday.

l-orizzont continues its stories on the Delimara power station extension, saying the new extension would have a short life. It also quotes Finance Minister Tonio Fenech saying in a separate story that Malta would be out of the recession within a year, In a third story, it asks if the Bahrija building permit will be withdrawn.

In-Nazzjon also highlights the arraignment of a man accused of double attempted murder. In other stories, it reports how a man was injured when he tried to stop a runaway hi-up yesterday.

El Pais says a small bomb exploded in a restaurant on the island of Majorca. No one injured as the restaurant was evacuated after a taxi company in the Basque region had received warnings in two phone calls from a person claiming to represent the Basque separatist group. ETA had earlier published a statement claiming responsibility for four other bombings that killed three people and injured dozens this summer.

The New York Times reports that 50 alleged Afghan drug traffickers with suspected ties to the Taliban have been placed on a Pentagon list of people targeted for elimination.

Iran News quotes Yadollah Javani, a senior general of the Iranian revolutionary guards, urging the government to try opposition leaders for having planned a coup against the Islamic establishment following the June re-election of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Jurnal de Chisinau reports that four pro-Europe parties in Moldova have announced they had formed a new coalition following last month's elections. The alliance, which controls 53 seats in the 101-member parliament, has named better relations with the EU, fighting corruption, a free and open media, and pulling Moldova's economy out of a deep recession as top priorities.

La Tribuna says Honduras' interim president Roberto Micheletti has said the country was embarking on a new effort to overcome diplomatic isolation after the June 28 coup.

In the US, People magazine quotes sources "very close'' to Michael Jackson's family denying claims by former child actor Mark Lester that he could be the biological father of the singer's daughter Paris

Asia Times says a groom in China's Jilin province tried to break a world record by giving his bride a special gown with a 1.2-mile-long train. The accessory, which included 9,999 red silk roses, took the bridal party more than three hours to unfurl. The groom and bride are looking to beat the current world record set by a Romanian bride who had a train just under a mile.
