Baltic Times reports that the Latvian government has agreed to slash pensions and state sector salaries in a bid to save the country from bankruptcy. It is seeking to avert the possible devaluation of its struggling currency, and it needs to reduce budget shortfalls in order to qualify for crucial financial aid from the European Union and the International Monetary Fund.

Corriere della Sera quotes the head of the UN World Food Programme saying high food prices have pushed another 105 million people into hunger in the first half of 2009, raising the total number of hungry people to over 1 billion.

Vancounver Sun reports that the leader of Canada's main opposition party, Michael Ignatieff is set to seek to topple Prime Minister Stephen Harper's minority government if Thursday's progress report on the country's stimulus package did not show enough progress in rolling out funds. Italy’s state-owned news agency Ansa reports that an Italian woman who arrived late for the Air France plane flight that crashed in the Atlantic last week has been killed in a car accident. Johanna Ganthaler, a pensioner, and her husband managed to pick up a flight from Rio the following day but died when their car veered across a road in Kufstein, Austria, and swerved into an oncoming truck. The husband was seriously injured.

Times of India says a furious young Indian bride burned her husband to death because he kept saying she was not as beautiful as one of his female friends. The couple had been married only a month when she tied him up and pour paraffin over him. She also claimed he threatened to abond her for not bringing sufficient money as dowry
