The following are the top stories in the Maltese and overseas press:

The Times says Italy has accepted migrants rescued by a Turkish ship which had been at the heart of a spat with Malta. It also reports that an offer has been made for talks between Freeport, the GWU and the MDU on the union recognition issue.

The Malta Independent says the Prime Minister yesterday appealed for European support on the migrants issue. It also reports a speech by PL Acting Leader Anglu Farrugia who said the employment situation was worrying.

In-Nazzjon says the rescued migrants are being taken to Sicily. In other stories, it quotes Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi saying the social partners need to be firm and united in their actions on the international economic crisis.

l-orizzont says hoteliers are concerned about the situation in tourism.

The Financial Times says Mr Darling is expected to concede taxpayers could lose up to £60 billion through the Government's rescue of the banking system.

Variety reports that Madonna suffered minor injuries and bruises as she fell off her mount while horseback when the horse was startled by paparazzi who had "jumped out of the bushes" to photograph her. The singer was treated at a Southampton hospital and was released.
